Managing Personnel

We were interviewed on camera yesterday for an awards ceremony happening in October (see posting below). One of the many questions we were asked was "What are the challenges you are experiencing today now that you're in business?"

One of the many challenges facing us today is managing staff. Managing personnel has got to be one of the biggest challenges we face on a daily basis.

There are some staff members who we never have any trouble with. They understand what Bogota is about, they follow rules and have no problem adhering to what is expected of them.

There are others, however, who still don't get it. That's the term we use here when we discuss our employees in private. "Do they get it?"

When they are still coming in late, when they still come in dressed in the attire of their choice rather than of our decision, when they seem to willfully ignore the rules we've layed down here in order to make Bogota a success, they are not getting it.

When we tell staff members, "Cell phones must be shut off upon the beginning of your shift," and they still use their cell phones when they think we're not looking, they're definitely not getting it.

When staff members continue to sit at the bar chatting away with each other including the bar tender when we've made it explicitly clear that the staff is not to sit at the bar, they are not 'getting it.'

As owner and manager, it is exhausting working with individuals who can't seem to 'get it.'
